Find the same thing for less, at a real store
The store you found something at is rarely the only one selling it. When you open a product in Tote, it looks for the same item at other sellers and shows you what it actually found — a real price at a real store, or nothing at all.

How the comparison works
Save the product with its price
The comparison starts from the price you'd pay at the store you found it, so the item needs one. Most saves fill it in; where a store hides it, you can type it in.
Tote searches other sellers
It looks up the product in broad shopping listings rather than a fixed list of partner stores, so which retailers appear depends on who actually lists it.
Every result is checked against your item
Each listing is classified as the same product or merely a similar one, using the evidence it carries. Accessories, refurbished units and listings priced implausibly low are thrown out first.
You see the best real offer
The price, the store, what it saves you, and when it was checked. Buy there if you like — or don't. Tote never checks out for you.
Same product and similar are different claims
A lower price on a different product is not a saving; it is a mistake you'd discover at checkout. So every result carries a label, and the labels mean something specific.
- Exact match — the listing and your item share an identifier, like a barcode number, or the same brand and manufacturer part number.
- Same product, different seller — the brand agrees and the product names match closely. This is the most common label, because many listings don't carry identifiers at all.
- Similar — everything else. A similar product is never presented as a better price for your item. It appears on its own shelf, titled for what it is, like “Similar for less”, where every product is both similar and cheaper.
The matching is cautious on purpose, and it is done by rules rather than by an AI model — a model asked “are these the same jacket?” answers confidently either way. Calling a genuine match merely similar costs you a saving you might have had. Calling a different product a match shows you a price for something you can't buy. Tote accepts the first mistake to avoid the second.
Three possible answers
- Found something: the cheaper price, where, and how much it saves.
- Found nothing cheaper: “Tote checked 6 other sellers — Nike has the best price we can find.” That is useful too; it means you can stop looking.
- Couldn't look: nothing is shown at all. Tote won't say “no cheaper price found” when it didn't search, because that sentence would be a claim it hadn't earned.
Only real prices
Every number in a comparison is a listing at a store, found by a search, with the date it was checked. Results are reused for a few hours so that two people who saved the same thing don't trigger two searches, which means a price can move after Tote saw it. Check it at the store before you buy — Tote tells you when it looked so you can judge how fresh it is.
Comparisons are of listed prices. Shipping, sales tax, membership pricing and coupons are decided at each store's checkout and aren't included.
When your item has no price because the store wouldn't show it to Tote — Target and Amazon leave it out of the page Tote's servers receive — there is nothing to be cheaper than. Instead you may see a price estimate: “Other stores sell this for $85–$120”, or “Similar items sell for…” when Tote can't be sure it's the same product, with how many stores the range came from. It sits in its own card, says it isn't the retailer's price, and is never counted in your cart's total. Add the price yourself and the full comparison runs.
How Tote makes money from this, and what that doesn't change
Some links to other stores are affiliate links, which means Tote may earn a commission if you buy. Where a link is one, the offer says so. The choice of which offer to show you is made on price, how sure the match is, and whether it's in stock — the code that picks the best offer is not given the affiliate information at all, so it can't prefer a store that pays.
That is also why this is free for everyone. What Tote+ adds is the part that happens later: continuing to check the price at your original store and telling you when it drops.
Common questions
- Is Find it cheaper free?
- Yes, on every product page, for everyone. Tote+ is for ongoing price tracking and alerts, not for comparing right now.
- Which stores does it check?
- It searches broad shopping listings rather than a list of partner stores, so the answer depends on the product and who lists it. A store that doesn't appear in those listings won't appear in Tote's results.
- Why didn't I see a comparison on an item?
- Either Tote couldn't search just then, or the item has no price to compare against. Tote shows nothing rather than a comparison it didn't actually make.
