How to use ChatGPT for shopping

ChatGPT is good at the part of shopping that is thinking and bad at the part that is remembering. Knowing which is which is most of the value.

What it is genuinely good at

  • Narrowing a field. Describing a constraint in a sentence beats twenty minutes of filters.
  • Explaining a difference. Why one material, standard or spec matters, when a spec sheet assumes you already know.
  • Naming the category. When you can describe what you want but not what it is called, which is the point search engines fail.
  • Talking through a tradeoff, where the answer depends on things a review cannot know about you.

What it is bad at, and why

Prices and stock. A model answers from training data or a quick look at a page, and neither is a live inventory. Treat any number it gives you as something to check at the shop.

And, more quietly damaging: remembering. A conversation is not a list. The four options you compared on Tuesday are somewhere in a thread you will not scroll back through, which is why so much AI shopping ends with nothing bought.

Fixing the memory problem

The fix is to give the assistant somewhere to put things. ChatGPT supports connectors, and Tote is one — so a decision made in the conversation lands in a cart that still exists tomorrow.

  1. Connect Tote

In ChatGPT, Settings then Connectors, and add Tote's address. Claude works the same way.

  2. Shop as you were

Ask the questions you were going to ask. Nothing about the conversation changes.

  3. Say where it goes

“Put that one in my kitchen cart.” The item is saved with its link, price and shop.

  4. Come back to a list

Open Tote later and the thinking has turned into something you can act on.

What an assistant cannot do to your cart

It cannot spend money — Tote has no checkout, so buying happens at the retailer, by you. The connection reaches your cart and nothing else on your account. And disconnecting takes effect on the next request rather than whenever a token happens to expire.

Common questions

Can ChatGPT buy things for me through Tote?
No. Tote never takes payment and has no checkout. An assistant can put things in your cart and take them out again; buying happens on the retailer's own site.
Does this work with Claude?
Yes. Tote is a Model Context Protocol server, so any client that speaks MCP can connect to it — the setup is the same address in both.
Can ChatGPT see the rest of my Tote account?
It reaches your carts and saved items. It is not given your payment details, because Tote does not have any.
