The best basic T-shirts for everyday wear

Updated · 6 picks · Not tested by Tote — how we picked

A good plain tee is the thing you want to find once and then just rebuy. These six cover the main choices — heavy or light, boxy or trim, big and tall or petite — so you can pick by fabric and fit rather than by photo.

Tote may earn a commission from some links. The store links on this page go straight to the retailer, and nothing here was picked, ranked or left out because of a commission.

How we picked

We have not tested these T-shirts — no wear tests, no wash tests. Every pick is here because the maker publishes facts you can check (fabric, weight where stated, fits, size range) and because at least one established outlet that did handle them recommends it. The summaries are in our own words; follow the source links for the originals.

Several well-known review sites were not readable to us when we built this list, so they aren't cited. We'd rather cite fewer sources we actually read than more we didn't.

What every pick had to show

  • Fabric the maker publishes: fiber content, and weight where it's stated.
  • Fit options and size range, including big, tall, petite or extended sizes where offered.
  • Colors: a real choice of everyday colors, not one or two.
  • A return policy you can read before buying.
  • A long-running style you can expect to buy again, sold by the maker and — where we could confirm it — other stores.
  • Recommended by at least one established outlet, linked below.

Our picks

Budget heavyweight

Hanes Beefy-T Heavyweight Cotton T-Shirt (5180)

A 6-ounce ringspun cotton tee with double-needle stitching, taped shoulders and a lay-flat ribbed collar, in a roomy full cut. Most colors are 100% cotton; the heathers are blends. Sizes run from S to 3XL in the standard style, with extended sizes to 6XL and a separate tall style. Esquire's staff call it their cheap everyday tee because it's thick enough to survive repeated bleaching, and Gear Patrol chose it over a similarly priced Uniqlo tee on value.

Good for:
Anyone who wants a thick, durable, inexpensive tee, including big and tall sizes.
Skip it if:
A slim or tailored fit, or a tagless shirt. If you want 100% cotton, check the label on heather colors.
Sold at:
Hanes, Amazon, Target

Garment-dyed, relaxed fit

Comfort Colors 1717 Garment-Dyed Heavyweight Tee

Garment-dyed ringspun cotton in a relaxed fit with a tubular (side-seamless) body, twill-taped neck and shoulders, and pre-shrinking done during the dye process. It comes in more than 30 colors in sizes S to 4XL. NBC Select's editors made it their top women's pick for a clean, unisex cut that stays opaque and keeps its shape, and Esquire notes it's the blank a lot of streetwear brands print on.

Good for:
Men or women who want a soft, slightly boxy, lived-in tee in a lot of colors.
Skip it if:
A fitted cut, or tall sizes — there aren't any.
Sold at:
Comfort Colors, Amazon, Kohl's

Lighter-weight value

Uniqlo Supima Cotton Crew Neck T-Shirt

100% Supima cotton in a balanced, not-oversized fit, in sizes XXS to 3XL and a range of colors. It's lighter and smoother than the heavyweights above. NBC Select ranked it second among men's tees for a middle weight that holds up to many washes; Esquire notes it fits on the trim side, so size up for more drape. If you want the thicker, boxier Uniqlo, Gear Patrol's comparison covers the Uniqlo U crew neck.

Good for:
People who want a smooth, lighter tee at a low price, including smaller frames (XXS).
Skip it if:
A heavyweight or boxy tee, or tall sizes.
Sold at:
Uniqlo

Premium, made in the USA

Buck Mason Pima Curved Hem Tee

A 140 GSM jersey knit from Supima cotton, sewn at Buck Mason's own mill in Mohnton, Pennsylvania, with a curved hem and a classic fit, and pre-shrunk. Buck Mason advertises 365-day returns. Esquire picks the slub version of this tee for its texture and hem, and Yahoo's 2026 men's T-shirt guide put a Buck Mason Pima tee first as one you can dress up or down. The outlets name slightly different Buck Mason models, so treat this as a pick of the Pima line.

Good for:
People who want a softer, more polished tee made in the US, and will pay more for it.
Skip it if:
Tight budgets, big or tall sizes (it tops out at XXL), or anyone who wants a heavyweight — 140 GSM is light.
Sold at:
Buck Mason, Nordstrom, Nordstrom Rack, Huckberry
Price:
about $48 at Buck Mason, checked September 19, 2026. Prices change; check before you buy.

Widest size range

Lands' End Men's Super-T Short Sleeve T-Shirt

Combed cotton that Lands' End says resists fading, pilling and shrinking, in four fit ranges — regular, tall, big, and big and tall — and more than 20 colors and stripes. Good Housekeeping picked it for exactly that combination of decent cotton and sizes most brands don't make. It's the most thinly sourced pick here (one review, from 2024), and it's on the list for its size range.

Good for:
Tall and big men, and anyone who wants the same tee in a lot of colors.
Skip it if:
A fashion-forward slim or boxy cut. Lands' End often runs promotions, so the price you see may depend on a code.
Sold at:
Lands' End, Macy's, Kohl's

Women's cut with petite and tall

Gap Organic Cotton VintageSoft T-Shirt (women's)

100% organic cotton in a classic fit, sold in regular, tall and petite fits from XXS to XXL, in a couple of dozen colors and stripes. NBC Select's editors ranked it among their women's picks for a standard fit that has shape without swallowing you. Gap's own review summary mentions some sizing and shrinkage complaints, so check the size notes before ordering.

Good for:
Women who want an affordable, soft, standard-fit tee, especially in petite or tall.
Skip it if:
A heavyweight or structured tee.
Sold at:
Gap
Price:
about $19 at Gap, checked September 19, 2026. Prices change; check before you buy.

How to choose a basic tee

  • Weight decides most of the feel. Heavier cotton (around 6 oz, or 180 GSM and up) is more opaque and holds its shape; lighter fabric drapes and is cooler.
  • Check the fit name, not just the size: "relaxed", "full cut" and "classic" mean different things at different brands, and some run a size large.
  • If you're tall, big, or petite, start with the brands that sell those cuts as separate fits rather than just longer sizes.
  • Heather colors are often cotton blends even when the solid colors are 100% cotton. The label per color is the one to read.
  • Buy one first. Once you know the size and color code that works, rebuying is the easy part.

Rebuy the one that fits

The hard part of a basic tee is finding the one that fits. After that, the useful thing is remembering exactly which one it was — style number, fit, size and color — and where it's cheapest this month. Save it to Tote and it sits alongside everything else you buy from other stores; Tote can also look for the same product at other sellers when you open it.

Common questions

Did Tote wear or wash these?
No. The picks rest on what the makers publish about fabric, fit and sizes, and on reviews from outlets that did handle them, all linked on this page.
Why do only some picks show a price?
We show a price only when we read it on the store's own page, and we show the date. Several of these brands price by color or run constant promotions, and where we couldn't read a clear price we left it out rather than guess.
Does Tote earn money from these links?
Not from the links on this page — they go straight to the store. If you save a product to Tote and buy through Tote's own buy button, Tote may earn a commission from some stores. That played no part in the picks.
