Keep a gift list that spans every shop

The good gift ideas arrive in March, from a shop you will not remember. Somewhere to put them is worth more than any amount of thinking in December.

Capture is the whole problem

Nobody struggles to think of gifts under pressure because they are unimaginative. They struggle because the ideas came months earlier and were never written down anywhere findable.

A cart per person

Keep one cart per person and add to it whenever something turns up, from whatever shop. By the time an occasion arrives you are choosing from a list instead of starting from nothing.

Sharing, and not sharing

A cart is private until you share it. So a list of ideas for somebody stays yours, while a list of things you would like can be handed to whoever asked — the same mechanism, pointed either way.

What Tote is not

It is not a gift registry. There is no reserving, no marking things as claimed so other guests cannot buy them, and no checkout — Tote never takes payment. If you need a registry for a wedding or a baby shower, use a registry. If you want somewhere to keep gift ideas across every shop, that is this.
