Everything you need to buy before a trip, in one place

Buying for a trip is the case that breaks every other method: the boots are from one shop, the bag from another, the adaptor from a third, and two people are deciding.

Why this one is hard

It is not a big list. It is a list spread across shops that do not know about each other, with a deadline, a budget somebody is watching, and more than one person adding to it. Every one of those makes a retailer wishlist useless.

A cart per trip

Give the trip its own cart and the total means something — you can see what the trip costs before you commit to any of it. Anything you are still unsure about goes to saved for later, so the cart stays a list of decisions rather than a list of ideas.

Share it with whoever is going

Share the cart and everyone is looking at the same list. When somebody buys the adaptor, they mark it purchased and it leaves the cart — which is the part a group chat can never do, because nothing in a chat can be marked done.

It is still a list afterwards

Purchases stay in your history, so the next trip starts from what you actually bought last time rather than from memory.
